Aladdin Fancy Dress

Aladdin is a famous old Arabian folk tale that originated in the early 1700s. It was written around the same time as those other famous folklore heroes Ali Baba and Sinbad – the latter having had several films made about the character.

More recently it has had a boost to its fame by receiving the Disney treatment in Disney’s Aladdin, for which Aladdin formed a near perfect match for the Disney formula.

The original story of Aladdin features a poor man, tricked by a wicked wizard into retrieving a lamp from a cursed cave without disclosing that the lamp was protected by a curse. When Aladdin eventually discovers this subterfuge he decided to keep the lamp for himself. He soon discovers that the lamp is magical when a genie eventually appears and grants him three wishes. Note: The story has been distorted somewhat to narrow the wishes down to a limit of three. But in the original story there was no such limit. Aladdim uses the genie for his own ends, one of his main goals being to become a rich nobleman or prince and marry a princess. However as everything is based on a lie and magic, Aladdin is soon put into a bind when that same wizard devises a trick to get the unsuspectuing princess to hand the lamp over to him.

And then what does the wizard do, he takes away everything Aladdin had gained, reducing him back to the poor man that he was to begin with. Aladdin uses the ring that the wizard gave him to help retrive the original lamp to summon another genie. This genie is not as powerful as the first but helps Aladdin to find the strength within a true and honest heart worthy of the riches and the hand of the princess. And this enables him to become with strength powerful enough to defeat the wizard.

Disney’s Aladdin story is pretty similiar to the original storyline up until the point where Aladdin becomes a prince and gets the princess, although both Aladdin and the wizard have accomplices in Disney’s version.

The characters are also more personalised. The princess is called Princess Jasmine, and the sorceror is called Jafar. And then both Jafar and Aladdin have animal accomplices with them that of course being a cartoon, can speak and communicate with humans, as well as engage in shenanigans.

Aladdin has a monkey called Abu and the wizard has a parrot called Iago. Iago steals the lamp rather than the wizard tricking the princess into handing it over. And instead of Aladdin summoning a second genie, he now has a lying a carpet that he uses to storm into the palace and confront and defeat Jafar.

He then uses the now limited third and final wish to set the genie free. The genie – affectionately referred to as the Blue Genie is in and of himself a significant and humorous character in Disney’s Aladdin.

And so Aladdin becomes a prince in heart and spirit, won back the heart of the princess and the stage is set for the typical everyone lives happily ever after ending.
